How to Use Your Drum Set to Earn A Living: Featuring Never-Fail, 3-Step Formula
You asked for it and here it is! I took the whole process of going from a beginner on the drums to a becoming a professional drummer and stripped the whole thing apart for you to see.
The good news? Its easier than you think! Just follow the never-fail, 3 Step Formula that's outlined below.
1. Gain Knowledge
I have a friend who can recite every FA Cup final result since 1939. Is it impressive? Yes. Does it get him gigs? No. What I'm talking about here is knowledge that you can actually use to make a living out your drum kit. Anything that will turn your drumming into cash. Anything that gets your skills to pay the bills.
Oh... and does it matter how much you know about the drums? Or Music? No. The important thing is that you know where to go to get the information that you need. Google is good. But even better is Alexander's "Number 1 Shortcut to Progress." Here it is (I recommend printing this out):
Find someone who is doing what you want to be doing, find out how they did it and then copy them furiously.
(You can add your own touches to it later after you've learned it.)
2. Get Passionate
Seriously. If you've ever lost sleep over your drumming or an up-coming gig then you know what I'm talking about here. A large part of the world is here to make sure you don't get excited about things. Think about it. How many times have you heard "calm down"? "Take it easy"? or "Don't panic"?
And how many times have you heard anyone say "get excited", "go crazy" or "get ready to explode"? The world is skewed so its your job to restore the balance. Let no one steal your excitement. Keep it, grow it and take it with you wherever you go. You'll thank me one day.
3. Take Action
Fear, self-doubt, uncertaintity, apathy, cynicism, insecurity, insignificance, inferiority. Everyone goes through all these emotions. I know I have, and its normal. But its not your job to be the best or,in fact, be better than anyone. Its your job to train like the best and fight like hell for what you believe in. I guarantee you that the more you start taking action the smaller these mind poisons will become.
Then... enjoy the rewards!
You've earned them and you'll be amazed at how well you'll do.
Alex.
