In this video you can watch me play through my favourite exercise for developing drum fills. Rather than just playing the same old fills that you are locked into the habit of doing, these patterns will help you gain the coordination you need to freely move around the drum kit.
You want to be aiming at total freedom and indepence in your fills. You want to be able to play your hands on any drum on the kit, on any note in any part of the bar.
The snare drum is naturally louder than the tom so make sure that you play the snare with your sticks low and hit the tom with your sticks high at 90 degress. This means you will get a more balanced sound out of the drum kit.
When you can play all these patterns, try playing them on different drums or even crash cymbals.
