How To Set Up Your Hi-hat Stand

how to set up your hi hat stand

The hi-hat stand and the bass drum pedal are the most complicated parts of the kit to set up. Not only that but they also come in lots of different varieties which makes learning how to set them up even more of a headache.

Anatomy of your hi-hat stand

Basically, your hi-hat stand will come in about 6 different parts:

Base
Pole
Tube
Support
Felt
Clutch

Spread the bass as far as it will go to make the stand more stable. Screw the pole into the shaft in the base. However, sometimes the pole will screw into the pedal of the hi-hat itself.

Once the pole is in place, put the tube over the top. The tube is what determines the height of your hi-hat. There's no correct height. So just experiment and go for what feels right. I played my hi-hat for a while as high and as low as it will go. Now I've settled for it being just below midway.

If it's too high then you will find it difficult to play with the tip of your stick. Too low and it will be difficult to play with the edge of your stick. Just try it out and you'll find your way!

Once the tube and the height is set, put your support in place on top of the tube. This gives your bottom hi-hat a stable surface to rest upon. Then put your felt on top of the support. This protects your hi-hat from actually having to sit on the support.

After that's done, put the bottom hi-hat on top of the felt. Next come your top hi-hat which gets screwed into your hi-hat clutch and attaches to the pole. Of course, you'll need to know how to set up your hi-hat clutch.

Getting it to a gig

When your transporting your hi-hat stand to a gig, always screw out the pole. This will save it from getting bent when you pack it away. If you have the type of stand where the pole screws into the pedal then its too much of a headache to unscrew the pole everytime. So instead, just raise the tube as high as it will go and screw it in place. This will help guard the pole against bending.

Does this help?
