How To Splash Your Hi-Hats
"Wow, I didn't know it could do that!"
This was my reaction the first time that I ever saw someone use this technique. I'd never heard anything like this coming out of the hi-hats before. It made me realise that if you're looking for new sounds to add to your drumming you don't always need to spend money on buying new gear. If you're creative enough you can find ways to get new sounds out of the gear that you already have.
This post continues my series on hi-hats. We've looked at how to set up your hi-hat stand, and how to set up your hi-hat clutch so now it's time to have some fun with them!

Try this
For this to work best, set up your hi-hat clutch so that your hi-hats are further apart than normal. About 5 cm (2 inches) will work well.
This gives them more room to breathe and gives a louder splash sound.
Put your foot in the heels down position on the hi-hat pedal and push down with your toes bring the hi-hat cymbals together.
Then quickly lift your toes again. This should send the top hi-hat back up and will let the sound ring out. And that's it, easy.
Try splashing 1/4 notes and solo over the top of it. The video I made at the top of this post shows you what it will look like when you get it going. You can also try using this technique with grooves as well. Although, you'll have to work hard to get your balance right.
Try it out and let me know what you think. Drop a comment below.
