What Is Forearm Rotation?

The limits of forearm rotation

The limits of forearm rotation

Forearm rotation is the name given to the movement you make to get between the 2 positions in these photographs.

Try this:

Put your arm in the position of the 1st photo. The palm of your hand faces up and in the same direction as the inside of your elbow. Your arm is fully supinated.

Now rotate your forearm so that it is now in the position in the 2nd photo. Your palm now faces down the way and your arm is fully pronated.

When you rotate your arm into the 2nd position you are pronating it. When you reverse the movement to go back to the 1st position you are supinating it.

Forearm rotation is the movement you would use to turn a key in a lock, turn a door handle or pour something.

What's this got to do with drumming?

In drumming, you use this movement when you use traditional grip or when you switch between French and German grips. If you are playing wrist technique with either German or French grip then do not use this movement. It's inefficient for these grips.

However, you can use this movement to make moving around the kit easier in these grips. For example, when you play one hand quickly between the snare and floor tom. If you play the floor tom supinated and the snare pronated you can move very easily between them without having to move much of your upper arm, shoulder and upper body.
