Why You Should Work Your Ass Off In 2010

So far this year, 2 deaths are on my mind.
28 Decemeber 2009:
Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, 28, drummer for Avenged Sevenfold dies at home.
Tributes flooded in all day on Twitter for The Rev. It was amazing to see the depth of feeling for this man from so many people. Here is the 1st line of Jimmy's obituary in the LA Times:
"He is found dead at his Huntington Beach home; there are no signs of foul play. The band, often referred to as A7X, has sold nearly 2.5 million albums."
That's a pretty cool opener. How many people will have that written about them? Avenged Sevenfold have been working their asses off since they formed in 1999. Even if you don't like their music you have to respect them for putting in so many years of dedication to their band.
Even tough its so sad that Jimmy has passed away, he is still with us in a way. His music can be found on Spotify, YouTube, iTunes, any record store... That's the great thing about being a musician. You never really die. But to achieve what Jimmy and Avenged Sevenfold did you're going to have to work your ass off just like they did.
01 January 2010:
Caroline Cumming, 23, was hit by a car and killed.
I still can't believe this happened. She was walking home after New Year's celebrations and was killed metres away from her home by a 17-year-old drunk driver. Caroline was a close friend of a family I know. Needless to day, everyone is devestated by this and struggling to make sense of it.
What do I think?
This kind of thing is difficult to comprehend. Maybe impossible. But all of us know that it does happen and could happen to anyone. It reminds us that our time is limited. It reminds us that our time to achieve what we want is limited. So if you're like me and you think your drumming still isn't at the level that you want it to be, then that's ok. But the Big Question is: What are you going to do about it? And when?
It reminds me of the Avenged Sevenfold lyric: "Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost"
I am already working my ass off in 2010.

It was so so sad to hear about what happened to Caroline, and my heart goes out to her family right now. You’re right too, it makes you realise how you have to get the most out of every moment and pursue life. Good blog.

Liam,
Thanks, I’m with you on that. I also like the way you say “pursue life.” The things that we want don’t just drop into our laps. We have to go after them, chase them and work to get them.
