Mary,

Bravo for organising the concert. If there are no role models near you then organise something to make them come to you. A genius idea. Reminds me of a quote from a movie "If you build it, they will come." Field of dreams I think.

You may be stuck somewhere you don't want to be and feeling intimidated at the moment but, with perseverance, things change, brick by boring brick.

Hi !

I drum to:
groove to the music
and to release inhibitions.

I loved your "Change the World" reason. I am one of those people stuck in a corporate world...for now. I have started drumming now that i'm in my 50s...and i LOVE IT. I am somewhat intimidated by it still...as I am older (LOL) and a woman and don't have many female role models (older). I am organizing a concert for female drummers here in our state and am finding it very exhilarating to connect with other drummers. Keep it up !!!

Good question.

I always first recommend developing the consistent habit of practising every day even if it's only for a few minutes. Then build up to an hour of quality work. After you've got to that stage, it's up to you. If you've got big dreams then you need to practise big amounts.

Sounds to me like you're already hitting the first stage which is great, some people never even get that far. Next, be honest with yourself and make sure that you are really doing quality practice and then slowly scale up the amount of work that you do each day.

You'll make good progress with an hour of quality practise. But you'll get to where you want to be a little faster if you do 8.

Keep in mind that there's no "right" amount to practise. It all depends on your goals, your willingness to work, your energy levels and free time.

Hope this helps,
Alexander

Not sure if I agrre with the comment about nylon tips. I actually prefer them to wooden tipes because wooden tips tend to chip and then before you know it you have a tip that isnt a circle anymore and the cymbal is affected by it. I prefer the stick to break off then have a messed up tip and get them same sound that i would from playing with the backside of a wooden spoon.
